BRAZIL LEGEND, DUNGA, WIFE ESCAPE DEATH IN SERIOUS CAR CRASH
Former Brazil captain Dunga miraculously escaped a serious crash over the weekend after flipping his car, The Mirror reports.
Dunga, 60, was travelling along a motorway in his country on Saturday afternoon when the incident happened. His vehicle overturned when travelling from Sao Paulo to Campina Grande do Sul with his wife.
Images from after the crash show Dunga’s wrecked car on its roof still in the road. Somehow, both Dunga and his wife sustained just minor injuries.
They were taken to hospital after the crash but were discharged a day later. Federal Highway Police performed a breathalyser test on the 91-time Brazil international, which returned a negative result.
Police believe the crash was a result due to the slippery road surface that was left sodden after heavy rain in Brazil. Dunga’s son Bruno has since spoken out about the crash.
In a statement, he thanked doctors for their assistance. He said: “To everyone who was concerned and supported the family, to the truck driver who immediately helped with first aid and to the Angelina Caron Hospital, where we were very well looked after by the team.”
Dunga started his international career in 1987 and enjoyed an 11-year spell with the side. He went on to make 91 appearances for the Selecao, scoring on six occasions.
He captained Brazil to the 1994 World Cup in the USA, while winning the Confederations Cup and two Copa America.
Also, he represented Brazil at the 1984 Olympics, helping the side to a silver medal.
He won the Copa America in 2007, the 2009 Confederations Cup and also a Bronze Medal in the Olympics. Dunga had a brief spell with Internacional before being reappointed Brazil boss in July 2014 as Luiz Felipe Scolari’s replacement.
He was in the role for just under two years, overseeing 26 matches in all competitions, winning 18. The ex-midfielder has not returned to management since.
Dunga was previously involved in a legal battle with Queens Park Rangers. He claimed he was owed £750k by the club after loaning that fee under previous ownership.
