A 300-level Linguistics student of Adekunle Ajasin University, simply known as Emmanuel, was on Sunday, shot and killed by gunmen in one of the private student hostels in Akungba Akoko.
A student who begged to remain anonymous said that the deceased had been shot in his room.
“It happened last night, the victim was shot while on his bed, in his room,” he said.
The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Odunlami Ibukun, gathered that the police had been informed and were currently investigating the incident.
He said, “It was reported to the police and they had to go to the crime scene. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm. The investigation is ongoing.”
In response, Comrade Oladele Emmanuel, Vice Chairman of the National Association of Universities Students, urged security services and university administration to look into the incident in detail and punish those responsible.
“The motive behind the killing is yet to be identified,” Emmanuel stated.
“However, the university community must be reassured that such a tragic event will be met with the full force of the law and diligent investigative efforts.”
According to Emmanuel, the young student’s passing was a tragic loss for the entire AAUA community in addition to his family and friends.
“He is irreplaceable to our common academic community because of his potential and contributions.
We lament his premature passing and offer our sincere sympathies to his family at this trying time.
The NAUS Vice Chairman recommended the university administration to improve security measures around the campus and nearby areas in the wake of this unfortunate tragedy. These steps included stepping up security patrols, improving lighting, and making sure emergency services were more easily available.
“We trust that the authorities will act with urgency and transparency in addressing this incident. Emmanuel’s memory deserves nothing less than our commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.”
The student union leader emphasised the need for the AAUA community to unite in their grief and resolve to create a safer, and more secure environment for all.
“We owe it to Emmanuel, his family, and to ourselves to ensure such a tragedy does not occur again,” he added.
