JUST IN: SHELVE PLANNED HARDSHIP PROTEST, TINUBU APPEALS TO NIGERIANS
Nigerians have been urged by President Bola Tinubu to postpone their scheduled “End Bad Government” demonstration for the following month.
Following a meeting with the President on Tuesday, Information Minister Mohammed Idris addressed a few State House media. He stated that Tinubu had advised the protest organizers to put the plan on hold and wait for the president to address their concerns.
“The issue of the planned protest, Mr President does not see any need for that. He’s asked them to shelve that plan. He’s asked them to await the government’s response to all their pleas,” the minister said.
All of the Federation’s states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, are expected to participate in the protest against economic hardship that is gaining popularity on social media in August. The protest’s organizers have chosen to remain anonymous.
Food and basic commodity prices have skyrocketed in recent months as Nigerians struggle with one of the biggest inflation and economic crises the nation has ever experienced, which was brought on by the government’s dual policy of eliminating gasoline subsidies and unifying exchange windows.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives have issued warnings against the scheduled demonstration on behalf of the Federal Government.
The President has been called to respond to the requests of the disgruntled individuals, the majority of whom are young people, by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Senator Ali Ndume, who is facing hardships.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga issued a warning on Saturday, stating that if the planned demonstration is carried out, it may turn into an asset destruction campaign similar to the EndSARS demonstration against extrajudicial murders and police brutality that took place in October 2020.
