Ezenwa Onyewuchi, a federal legislator from the Imo East Senatorial District, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Onyewuchi’s defection was revealed by Senate Majority Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele on Tuesday during plenary.

Salman Idris, a representative in the House of Representatives, also defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the African Progressive Party (APC).

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen issued a letter on Tuesday on the House floor that officially confirmed the MP’s political decision. The lawmaker represents the Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in the green chamber.

In accordance with Senate norms, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma was invited into the sacred chamber earlier on Tuesday.

The APC Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman, Uzodimma, along with his group, were present to see Onyewuchi resign from the ruling LP to the APC.

In his letter, Onyewuchi—whose defection raises the total number of Imo State senators for the APC to three—exposed his resignation from the Labour Party due to internal party strife.

He added that his choice complies with the requirements of the constitution.

Onyewuchi was brought to take his seat in the APC wing of the Senate Chambers shortly after being greeted by APC senators.
