WORLD NEWS: RUTO UNVEILS CABINET LINEUP WITH FOUR OPPOSITION FIGURES
Following more than a month of anti-government demonstrations, Kenyan President William Ruto on Wednesday appointed four prominent opposition lawmakers to a “broad-based” cabinet.
After a list of an additional ten ministers was given to parliament on Tuesday, Ruto announced the names of ten ministers to be part of a revised cabinet, including four who are close to longtime opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The beleaguered president fired nearly all of his cabinet members on July 11 and unveiled a new, incomplete roster on July 19, which did include some of the fired ministers.
“I commend the leadership of diverse organisations, both in public and private sectors, including political parties for the encouraging response to my outreach to consult on forming a broad based government,” Ruto said on Wednesday.
“Their willingness to set aside partisan positions and interests in order to join a visionary partnership for the radical transformation of Kenya is a historic gesture of their patriotism.”
The four opposition nominees are Wycliffe Oparanya as the head of the cooperatives ministry, Ali Joho for the mining ministry, James Opiyo Wandayi for energy, and John Mbadi, who was assigned to the Treasury.
Parliament has to give its approval to the nominations.
Members of the fired cabinet made up five of the names released on Wednesday.
Ruto has been trying to mitigate the problem since late June by implementing a number of initiatives, including eliminating extremely unpopular tax increases and promising reductions to what many perceive to be extravagant government spending.
Even though they were far fewer than they were last month, protests spearheaded by Gen-Z Kenyans have persisted around the nation using the hashtag #RutoMustGo, with angry activists also calling for action against alleged police brutality and corruption.
