NEWS UPDATE: KANO SANCTIONS SIX COURT REGISTRARS FOR FORGERY, EXTORTION
Six court registrars have been sanctioned by the Kano State Judicial Service Commission for a variety of offenses, including extortion and forgery.
The decision was made at the commission’s 74th meeting, which was held on July 22, 2024, according to a statement released by the commission’s spokesperson, Baba Jibo, on Friday.
Jibo claims that the Judiciary Public Complaint Committee looked into a complaint made against Mustapha Makama and Yusuf Yakasai, two court registrars, who were accused of plotting and extorting N130,000 from the petitioner under false pretenses of releasing a suspect on bail.
“The committee found that their actions amounted to extortion and conspiracy involving unlawful receipt of funds,” the statement read.
Yakasai, an accessory to the wrongdoing, was demoted one grade level, while Makama was ordered to proceed with compulsory retirement after it was determined that he was unfit and appropriate to remain in the judiciary.
Similarly, the JPCC looked into a petition against a syndicate in the person of Court Registrars Auwalu Ibrahim Khalil, Ismail Garba, and Salisu Ado (Secretary at High Court Complex Bompai), as well as Senior Registrar Bilya Abdullahi (High Court No. 9). They were found to have engaged in conspiracy, forgery, and cheating by issuing a forged bank reversal court order and forging a magistrate’s signature.
“The Judicial Service Commission upon adoption of the recommendation of the JPCC has suspended the above-mentioned staff immediately,” the statement added.
According to the statement, the commission will keep enforcing the proper sanctions against any staff members who commit errors, especially those who are assigned judicial duties, in order to protect the judicial system’s accountability and integrity and to uphold the public’s confidence.
