(PHOTOS) PROF. SOYINKA @90: SANWO-OLU, DIPLOMATS LAUD NONAGENARIAN’S COURAGE AGAINST OPPRESSION, CORRUPTION
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, along with the Consul-General of India in Lagos, Mr. Chandramaouli Kumar Kern, and the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Mr. Johnny Baxter, have commended Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka for his unwavering stance against oppression, corruption and human rights abuses.
The Governor and the Diplomats gave the commendation at an event held in honour of Prof. Soyinka at the residence of the British Deputy High Commissioner in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria, recently to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Nobel laureate.
Prof. Soyinka, known for his fearless criticism of corrupt leaders and his advocacy for human rights, was hailed by the Lagos State Governor as a “true Nigerian hero” and a “global icon of intellectual and moral courage”.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary of Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, described the nonagenarian as a “beacon of hope” and a “shining example” of courage in the face of adversity, noting that the celebrant has inspired generations to stand up for their rights and fight against injustice.
“He has been a steadfast voice against oppression, corruption, and tyranny. Prof. Wole Soyinka’s bravery has inspired generations to stand up for their rights and the rights of others. Prof. Wole Soyinka is not just a literary giant; he is a beacon of truth, a relentless advocate for justice, and a symbol of resilience”, the Governor stated.
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted Soyinka’s impressive body of work, which includes powerful plays and thought-provoking essays that have transcended cultural and linguistic barriers, earning him a place among the greatest writers of our time.
The Governor expressed deep gratitude to Prof. Soyinka for his invaluable contributions to society. “Let us take this opportunity to express our most sincere gratitude to Prof. Wole Soyinka for his invaluable contributions. May your legacy continue to inspire us to be fearless in our pursuit of truth, justice, and creativity”, he concluded.
Diplomats from various countries also praised Prof. Soyinka’s contributions to literature, human rights, and social justice.
Johnny Baxter specifically noted that Soyinka’s work has had a profound impact on the global community, inspiring people to speak out against oppression and demand accountability from leaders.
The event honoured the life and legacy of the Nobel laureate, whose contributions to literature, drama, and human rights have left an indelible mark on the world.
