COURT EXTENDS PROTEST RESTRICTIONS TO TWO VENUES IN LAGOS

A Lagos High Court in Igbosere has extended a previous order limiting protests in Lagos to the Freedom and Peace Park in the Ojoto and Ketu areas.

Justice S.I. Sonaike issued the extension following a request from Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN. The request complied with the pre-action protocols for preventive measures ordered last week by another vacation judge, Justice Emmanuel Ogundare.

Pedro, represented by Director for Civil Litigations Mr. Hameed Oyenuga, informed the court that the earlier court order had been served to all respondents, complying with pre-action protocols for pre-emptive reliefs sought by the Attorney General against the protest leaders.

He argued that although the respondents had not yet responded, extending the restriction of protests to two locations would help maintain the state’s relative peace amid nationwide protests.

In her ruling, Justice Sonaike expressed satisfaction with the AG’s compliance with Justice Ogundare’s orders and extended the restriction of protests to Freedom and Peace Parks in the Ojota and Ketu areas until full compliance with the pre-action orders is achieved.

Last week, Justice Ogundare ruled on a pre-emptive ex parte application filed by Mr. Pedro to maintain public safety and prevent irreparable loss of life and property during the protests, placing restrictions on the protesters.

The co-defendants listed in the application included Adamma Ukpabi and Tosin Harsogba (for Active Citizens Group), Comrade Juwon Sanyaolu and Hassan Soweto (for Take It Back Movement), persons unknown, and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State.

While presenting his application, Mr. Pedro argued that as the state’s Chief Law Officer and given the notices from various groups supporting and opposing the nationwide protest, it was necessary to protect the state’s critical infrastructure and prevent irreparable loss of life and property, as seen during the EndSARS protests in 2020.
