MRA URGES FG TO ADHERE TO COURT ORDERS PROHIBITING ATTACKS ON JOURNALISTS
The Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has called on the Federal Government to adhere to the directives of a Federal High Court in Abuja, which instructed it to implement effective measures to protect journalists and other media professionals from attacks.
The MRA also urged the government to conduct thorough investigations, prosecute, and hold accountable those responsible for assaults on journalists.
In response, the MRA sent a formal letter to the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, expressing their serious concern about the ongoing attacks and harassment of journalists throughout Nigeria.
Head of MRA’s Legal Department, Ms. Obioma Okonkwo, stated: “Non-compliance with such orders not only undermines the judicial process but also threatens the very fabric of our democratic society.”
Ms. Okonkwo emphasized that the ongoing disregard for court orders constitutes contempt of court, which could undermine public trust in the justice system and damage the government’s reputation both nationally and internationally.
She urged the Attorney-General to promptly ensure full compliance with the court’s rulings, to prevent further assaults on journalists, and to hold those responsible accountable.
Additionally, she called on the Attorney-General to act quickly to uphold the rule of law and show his dedication to justice by ensuring the safety and protection of journalists throughout Nigeria.
“The world is watching, and Nigeria must uphold its democratic obligations and the protection of fundamental human rights, including freedom of the press,” she added.
