DSVA COMMENCES SUPPORT, HEALING GROUP PROGRAMME FOR CHILDREN IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE HOMES
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), through its Psychosocial Department, has commenced a Support and Healing Group Programme for Children who have witnessed Intimate Partner Violence in their homes.
The Programme is aimed at providing a safe and nurturing environment where children can explore their emotions, build resilience, and develop essential coping skills.
Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi remarked that Children today face a myriad of challenges from family usually resulting from domestic violence. The Support and Healing Group Programme therefore aims to address these early, helping children develop the emotional tools they need to thrive both now and in the future.
“It is an innovative initiative that offers children the opportunity to connect with peers who are experiencing similar challenges and is facilitated by trained clinical psychologists specialising in child psychology and emotional well-being ensuring that the children receive the care and attention they need”, she stated.
On her part, the Head of the Clinical Psychology Department, DSVA, Mrs. Olive Oluwagbemileke stressed that the programme is designed to run for four weeks, offering consistent support to the children as they navigate their emotional journeys.
She said. “The group sessions with over 50 children are held in a safe, confidential setting where children can express themselves freely without judgement, as it combines therapeutic activities, group discussions, and creative outlets to help children process their emotions and build confidence.
“Our goal is to create a space where children can heal, grow, and learn to navigate their emotions positively and healthily despite the trauma they have been exposed to at home”, she added.
