BREAKING: S’COURT AFFIRMS DUOYE DIRI’S RE-ELECTION AS GOVERNOR OF BAYELSA
The Supreme Court dismissed Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the November 11, 2023, off-cycle election, and upheld Senator Duoye Diri’s reelection as the governor of Bayelsa State.
On Friday, a five-person Apex Court panel led by Justice Lawal Garba upheld the July 15 Court of Appeal ruling that Sylva’s appeal was an abuse of the legal system for submitting two notices of appeal.
The APC governorship candidate only has one appeal right against the Tribunal’s decision, not numerous appeal rights, according to the Apex Court panel, which cited a clause of the 1999 Constitution in support of its ruling.
As a result, the APC governorship candidate, who sent two notices of appeal to the Appellate Court, was criticized by the Court.
The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal as meritless in a majority decision.
Governor Duoye Diri of the PDP defeated his nearest opponent, Timipre Sylva of the APC, with a total of 175,196 votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Sylva received 110,108 votes.
