POLICE RESCUE 27-YEAR-OLD MAN FROM SUICIDE ATTEMPT OVER 1m DEBT IN ANAMBRA
The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 27-year-old man, identified as Alozie John, from an attempted suicide in the Umunnachi community, Dunukofia Local Government Area. The young man, a livestock dealer from Isielu LGA of Ebonyi State, reportedly attempted to take his life due to a debt of N1.2 million owed to his livestock supplier.
In a statement released on Saturday, Anambra State Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the man was saved on Friday after his distressing WhatsApp conversation was intercepted by security operatives.
“On 23/8/2024, Anambra police rescued a young man who attempted to take his own life. He was debriefed, provided with medical assistance, and placed in safe custody for monitoring,” Ikenga said.
The intercepted WhatsApp message revealed that Alozie had consumed a poisonous substance, hoping for death, due to the overwhelming debt. He admitted to dealing in live chicken sales and, despite taking the harmful chemical, did not experience any immediate effects.
The police contacted his mother, who is now assisting with his evaluation and arranging for his transfer to a better facility for the necessary care and support.
