EX-MTN GROUP CEO, SIFISO DABENGWA DIES OF CANCER
Following a protracted fight with cancer, Sifiso Dabengwa, the former CEO of MTN Group, was declared dead on Monday morning.
From March 2011 until March 2015, Dabengwa served as the CEO of MTN. However, he was forced to step down as the company sought to bargain its way out of a record N1.04 trillion fine imposed by Nigeria on the telco for neglecting to deactivate more than five million unregistered SIM card users.
Until 2006, Dabengwa, who was born in Zimbabwe, also held a brief position as CEO of MTN Nigeria.
South African media outlets are quoting a family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni, to have confirmed his death.
According to the reports, Sibanyoni said, “Dabengwa was a titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman. His tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015 was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry”.
Sibanyoni said Dabengwa, left a legacy that extends far beyond the boardroom.
