PARKING POLICY: LASPA MEETS WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF RCBC

Read Time:2 Minute, 15 Second

The Restaurant, Café, Bar, and Club (RCBC) Association met with Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), recently to discuss concerns about the State Parking Policy’s effect on the hospitality industry.

At the current meeting, which took place at LASPA’s Sasegbon Street, Ikeja GRA office, Mrs. Adelabu gave attendees confidence regarding the government’s dedication to the policy, which attempts to address careless parking and reduce traffic jams.

Mrs. Adelabu emphasized the need for cooperation and assistance while acknowledging the important role played by the hospitality industry in the state’s traffic and parking management.

She answered questions regarding conflicting local government jurisdictions and meddling. She also made it clear that, in order to prevent conflicts over parking fees, the state government has formed a strategic alliance with local administrations and council development zones.

In reference to insufficient parking infrastructure, Mrs. Adelabu pointed out that several establishments in the hospitality industry have violated construction codes by neglecting to provide enough parking for patrons. Companies can address parking shortages during a six-month grace period provided by LASPA, which also offers solution guidance. Additionally, the Authority recommends that companies contact LASPA before permitting patrons to park on public property, as this may cause traffic congestion.

Recognizing the difficulties that companies encounter, Mrs. Adelabu asked the hotel industry to share their unique requirements with LASPA so that the organization can offer suitable advice and suggest parking possibilities in the area.

“It is essential to balance business interests with the rights of the general public. The authority has provided ample time and opportunities for businesses to adapt. Being mindful of prevailing circumstances, it has also made provisions for suitable payment plans for those who comply,”  she added.

The General Manager, therefore, urged all Lagosians to support the state government’s parking regulation efforts, saying, “We encourage everyone to back the Lagos State Parking Policy and participate in the regulated on-street parking scheme. Compliance with the policy is vital for reducing traffic congestion and improving parking efficiency. By paying the required parking levies and engaging with the system, you help create a more organised and accessible urban environment.”

In response, the president of RCBC, Mrs. Morenike George-Taylor, acknowledged that many members had already complied and thanked the general manager for his proactive involvement. She added that the hotel industry is prepared to support and modify the new parking plan.

The Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, Tokunbo Sotinwa, was also present during the meeting.

The public was urged by the agency to contact LASPA at 02-01-2275231 or 02-01-2275230 for further information about the controlled on-street parking program or any other parking-related questions.
