The Lagos State Government called on the Council’s border stakeholders to embrace peace and avoid boundary conflicts that could destabilize the State.

At a sensitization meeting on the harmonisation of peaceful co-existence between border communities in Lagos State, which was held in the Ministry’s conference room, the charge was given by the Honorable Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert.

Robert confirmed that the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, has continued to ensure peaceful communal existence and zero-level communal clashes that can arise from boundary disputes in the State. Robert was represented by Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, the Permanent Secretary.

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for approving the stakeholders’ engagement. She also pointed out that the current administration has been working nonstop to resolve disputes in disputed areas in a peaceful manner, which has guaranteed Lagos State’s ongoing peace and harmony.

However, he asked participants to refrain from interfering with or rejecting the inspection’s findings, which established the boundaries between the various parties. They should also start advocacy programs in local areas to inform others about this.

Participants from the Local Government and Councils Development Areas were commended by Surveyor Saliu Odupe, the representative of the Surveyor-General, Lagos State, for consistently making sure that boundary issues in their communities are brought to the attention of the State Government, which has helped to reduce cases of boundary disputes.

He urged them to resolve border conflicts through appropriate arbitration in order to prevent problems that could lead to a collapse in law and order, a social crisis, or even fatalities.

In order to ensure that boundary issues in the State are appropriately addressed, the Chairman of the Badagry Local Government Area, Hon. Onilude Olusegun, praised the Ministry’s efforts in setting up these sensitization meetings where sufficient information on boundary matters is discussed.

In a similar vein, one of the facilitators, Town Planner Emmanuel Adebola, emphasized the value of pre-action procedures in settling border conflicts so as to avoid confrontations. He reaffirmed that boundary disputes can be settled peacefully through the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution techniques, which may not always need going to court or causing conflicts within the community.

Legal officers, heads of agriculture, engineers, and surveyors from the State’s local government/council development areas were also present at the sensitization meeting.
