ELECTION: APC SWEEPS 27 LG CHAIRMANSHIP SEATS IN IMO

Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has proclaimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all 27 local government chairperson seats, as well as 305 ward and councillorship seats, in the state’s recently ended local government elections.

The Commission’s Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, made the announcement on Monday at the commission’s headquarters in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

He claimed that the election, which followed state electoral laws and standards, was credible, free, and fair.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state quickly condemned the election as a fraudulent exercise and a violation of democratic ideals.

While the state’s APC chairman, Macdonald Ebere, congratulated all APC candidates on their victories, he dismissed claims made by the opposition PDP as false.

The 27 LG chairmen and 305 councillors are anticipated to receive certificates of return and be sworn in. Hope Uzodimma, the governor of Imo State, represents the APC.

Over 15 states have announced or held local government elections in the last two months since the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to the third tier of government by ordering the Federal Government to pay the 20.60% monthly allocation of the country’s 774 LGs directly to their exclusive accounts rather than governor-controlled accounts.

The Supreme Court’s major decision in July also prohibited power-hungry governors from dissolving democratically elected local government bodies.
