The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), in collaboration with USAID and the Lagos Urban Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (LUWASH) initiative, has unveiled a groundbreaking five-year Strategic Action Plan (2025-2030).

The all-encompassing plan aims to protect public health, increase environmental sustainability, manage wastewater sustainably throughout Lagos State, and raise everyone’s standard of living.

Speaking recently during the Strategic Action Plan’s unveiling at the Safely Managed Sanitation (SMS) Conference, which took place over two days at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Victoria Island, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, General Manager of LSWMO, emphasized the crucial role that the plan will play in achieving sustainable urban development.

In his words: “This plan is a clear demonstration of our commitment to improving sanitation in Lagos. By working closely with USAID and other partners, we will create an environment that prioritises public health, environmental protection, and economic growth”.

He pointed out that the new plan has four main goals to advance wastewater management and is in line with the recently unveiled Lagos WASH Policy 2024.

He claims that the plan will increase the effectiveness of the current wastewater management systems, guaranteeing that all pertinent entities are prepared to handle the city’s expanding needs and provide improved sanitation services to everyone, especially in underprivileged areas.

“The LSWMO will explore innovative revenue mechanisms to create a financially sustainable model for wastewater management in Lagos. Upgraded infrastructure will be deployed to mitigate the environmental impact of wastewater discharge, contributing to a cleaner, safer ecosystem”, the General Manager stated.

He said that the Lagos State administration is aggressively looking for investment collaborations to improve infrastructure and provide long-term answers to the wastewater problems facing the metropolis. The General Manager emphasized the need for private-sector collaborations to stimulate funding for wastewater solutions, highlighting the sector’s importance to Lagos’ development and the enhancement of public health.
