BOAT CAPSIZES IN NIGER STATE CLAIMS OVER 150 LIVES
More than 150 passengers are feared dead in a Niger state boat accident.
The sad ship carried around 300 passengers prior to the accident, the majority of them were women and children.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during a trip celebrating Maulid.
The incident transpired during the journey of the travelers from Mundi Community to Gbajibo Community in honor of the Maulid holiday. The boat, according to witnesses, was overloaded and struggling to remain afloat in the stormy River Niger.
The State Ministry of Transportation, the Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers are collaborating with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to coordinate the ongoing rescue operations.
The incidence was verified by NSEMA Director General Alhaji Absullahi Baba-Arah.
“NSEMA received a report of a boat accident that occurred on the night of October 1, 2024, around 8:30 pm along River Niger, upstream of Jebba Dam, at Gbajibo Community in Mokwa LGA,” he said.
