According to the National Emergency Management Agency, the town has not seen such severe flooding in thirty years when the Alau Dam burst due to excessive rains.

At least 414,000 people have reportedly been forced to flee their homes, and the catastrophic flood that hit Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, claimed 30 lives.
