EZEKWESILI CALLS FOR TRANSPARENT ELECTORAL SYSTEM
Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, the former minister of education, has advocated for further laws and initiatives to support democracy in Africa.
She emphasized that a transparent political system with capable leaders who can address the social and economic issues facing the continent is necessary for democracy to flourish.
At a three-day African Conference hosted in Abuja by the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG), Ezekwesili made this statement.
She said that the SPPS programme was to groom young leaders from 20 African countries with the right mindset to improve the standard of governance.
Ezekwesili said: “What we are doing is correcting not just the supply side dealing by having a school that raises a new generation of politicians that will govern for the public good for the collective good of the society and not for their personal interest.
“We are in fact also focused on the political literacy that is given to the demand side so that they understand their influence to determine the quality of governance.”
Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, a member of the Ghanaian parliament, voiced concerns about the effects of foreign meddling in Africa by introducing economic and political models that have made the continent’s population poorer.
Rawlings emphasized that inclusive government and accountability are necessary to confront the nation’s crimes against humanity.
Kah Walla, a political activist from Cameroon as well, claimed that conflicts brought on by bad administration displaced approximately 45 million people from Africa every year.
He emphasized the necessity of addressing the issues and minimizing conflict.
