BREAKING: LAGOS ASSEMBLY SUSPENDS ALIMOSHO COUNCIL CHAIRMAN
On Monday, the Lagos State House of Assembly suspended Jelili Sulaimon, Chairman of the Alimosho Local Government Area, indefinitely for suspected misbehaviour.
According to a spokeswoman for Assembly Speaker Eromosele Ebhomele, the suspension is effective immediately.
Ebhomele stated that the lawmakers in plenary resolved that the vice chairman of the council, Akinpelu Johnson, take over the administration of the local government.
The House also directed the council’s management, including the manager and treasurer, to recognise the vice chairman’s authority and provide him with all necessary support to ensure his effective performance.
The chairman was suspended in a unanimous vote by parliamentarians for suspected noncompliance, resistance, and an obstinate attitude towards the parliamentary House.
Moving a motion for his suspension, Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, recalled that in April 2024, pandemonium broke out in the Iyana-Ipaja axis of Alimosho Local Government, resulting in the death of one Michael Ajayi.
Okanlawon, whose committee was tasked with investigating the reason for the pandemonium, stated that Jelili orchestrated the disruption.
According to Okanlawon, all stakeholders involved in the problem were invited, but Jelili proceeded to demonstrate wrongdoing before the House committee.
He emphasised the council chairman’s refusal to follow the Assembly’s directions and his abuse of public resources. He consequently asked for Jelili’s immediate suspension in accordance with relevant parts of the 1999 Constitution as modified.
“He should be suspended immediately while the vice chairman, Akin Johnson, takes over with immediate effect,” he said prayerfully.
While endorsing the call for Jelili’s suspension, Majority Leader of the House Noheem Adams stated that the step will make other local government chairmen feel comfortable.
“The Alimosho council chairman does not follow procurement processes or the budget. There has been a lot of misconducts from him and I support that the chairman be suspended indefinitely,” he said.
In his presentation, Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, alluded to the State Auditor-General’s report on Jelili’s actions. The study highlighted the council chairman’s frequent noncompliance with financial standards, including serious inconsistencies in his records.
Akinsanya, underlining the disparities, supported Okanlawon’s plea for Jelili’s suspension.
The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, presided over the meeting and directed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to forward the Assembly’s resolution to the appropriate authorities.
