The Super Eagles are stuck in Al Abraq Airport almost 12 hours after arriving in Libya, and they have threatened to skip the 2025 AFCON qualifier.

The Nigerian delegation attending the match stayed at the Al Abraq Airport, according to a statement released Monday by the Communications Department of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

The players and officials were left stranded at the airport with their bags, and the Libyan airport officials showed no concern for their predicament, according to a video that the Eagles media team shared.

On Sunday morning, the Eagles left for Libya in preparation for their match against the Mediterranean Knights on matchday four of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tournament.

The three-time African winners will play in Libya at the 10,000-seat Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benina, which is only 10 kilometres from Benghazi. However, there have been rumours that they were moved to a different place.

“The chartered ValueJet aircraft was, strangely and in a dangerous manner, diverted to the small airport away from Benghazi just as the pilot was completing his approach to the Benghazi Airport. We understand the Al Abraq International Airport is only used for hajj operations.

“Fatigued players and officials have remained nonplussed as the host Libyan Football Federation failed to send any reception team or even vehicles to take the delegation members from the airport to their hotel, said to be 3 hours away in Benghazi.

“The NFF made arrangements for separate vehicles for the team but the plan was unhinged by the diversion of the aircraft,” the statement read in part.

The NFF administrators are planning to fly the team back home, and the players have decided not to continue playing the game.

A late goal from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru gave Nigeria a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Libya on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
