TikTok has announced the removal of over 2.1 million videos in Nigeria for violating its community guidelines during the second quarter of 2024.

This move is a part of the company’s continuous efforts to improve content filtering and make the platform safer for users.

Less than 1% of all videos uploaded in Nigeria during the reporting period have been removed, according to the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report released on Tuesday.

“Key findings show that 99.1 per cent of these videos were proactively removed before users reported them, with 90.7 per cent taken down within 24 hours. These figures highlight TikTok’s commitment to staying ahead of harmful content, ensuring a safer platform for Nigerian users,” the report noted.

In order to further demonstrate its commitment to openness and platform security for its broad user base in Nigeria and around the world, the Chinese-owned video platform promised to keep investing in technology that would enhance content filtering and help identify possible threats.

In June 2024, TikTok reported that it had deleted over 178 million videos worldwide, 144 million of which were made possible by automated technologies.
“TikTok is more effective than ever at removing harmful content before users encounter it, with a proactive detection rate now at 98.2% globally,” the short-form mobile video platform said.

Chinese entrepreneurs launched ByteDance, a private international firm that owns TikTok. The ownership of ByteDance is split between its founders (20%), employees (20%), and international institutional investors (60%) according to TikTok.
