Engr. Olayinka Abdul, the General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) Agency, has called on construction professionals to adhere strictly to regulatory processes to address safety challenges in Lagos State.

Speaking at a plenary session during the 2024 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIB) Lagos State Chapter, held at the Podium in Lekki on Wednesday, Abdul emphasized the importance of achieving efficiency while maintaining safety standards for all structures in the state.

She said, “The epochal economic impact on every sector requires consistent deliberations from various experts across all spectrums of the country, especially at the critical juncture for our nation’s Real Estate landscape for safety.

“We must navigate with foresight and collaboration, which I fervently proffer a collaborative approach between Government Agencies and Industry Stakeholders, to ensure digital platforms for application submissions, inspections, and more so, enhancing materials testing processes that are accessible and seamless for all consumers”, Abdul added.

While maintaining that the materials used in the construction of projects are of quality standards, the General Manager implored “The strength and integrity of our buildings rely not only on skilled labour but also on quality materials. However, the path to achieving this quality and integrity is often obstructed by regulatory complexities which though being a double-edged sword essential to ensure safety, quality, and environmental protection to lives and properties across Lagos State”.

Engr. Olayinka Abdul, the General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) Agency, has urged the need for rigorous advocacy and awareness regarding the Agency’s revamped processes to maintain the integrity of buildings in response to Lagos State’s rapidly growing population and urbanization.

Speaking at a recent event, Abdul emphasized that LSMTL serves as the cornerstone of the built environment in the state, necessitating strict quality assurance measures for construction projects. She highlighted the importance of employing comprehensive testing methods to ascertain whether construction materials can withstand environmental pressures and exhibit long-term durability.

She also pointed out the Agency’s critical role in assessing the environmental adaptability of construction materials, particularly given Lagos’s unique topography as a major riverine community. This involves evaluating factors such as soil salinity, waterlogging, and erosion to identify materials best suited to endure the region’s demanding conditions, which is essential for fostering durable and sustainable structures.

Reiterating the Agency’s commitment to safety, Abdul stressed that established regulatory standards and guidelines must be strictly enforced to protect residents’ lives. She noted that thorough assessments of material quality are vital to combat mediocrity within the construction sector.

The highlight of the two-day event, which commenced on Wednesday, 16th October, was an exhibition showcasing activities related to the infrastructural sector. LSMTL set up a dedicated exhibition stand to engage with customers and address their interests, reinforcing the Agency’s commitment to enhancing construction quality and safety across Lagos State.
