HEALTH: FCT ACTIVATES CHOLERA EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTRE
The Federal Capital Territory’s Public Health Department (PHD) has activated the Cholera Emergency Operations Centre as part of its surveillance and readiness efforts for any cholera outbreaks in the FCT.
Gana Adam, Permanent Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, stated that the activation of the cholera emergency operations centre over the weekend was required due to the high number of reported cholera cases across the 36 states.
He stated that as an expanding metropolis, the FCT is susceptible to cholera and is taking aggressive measures to prevent and restrict the disease’s spread.
Adam further stated that the Secretariat would not spare any resources or attempts to prevent a cholera breakout in the FCT.
He directed that all key stakeholders be included in the development of disease prevention methods that are effective and reliable.
As of October 13, 2024, 14,237 cholera cases have been documented across the states and the FCT, affecting 339 local government districts. However, 378 lives have been lost, yielding a case fatality ratio of approximately 2.7%.
