OKONJO-IWEALA REFUTES FALSE CLAIMS OF $57.5B IMF LOAN FOR BIAFRA INDEPENDENCE
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has strongly denied a claim circulating on social media that she helped facilitate a $57.5 billion loan for the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE). The claim, made by Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of the Biafran separatist movement, suggested that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had agreed to grant the loan to support the formation of a Biafran government following a planned declaration of independence on December 2, 2024.
In a tweet earlier today, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala firmly rejected the statement, calling it “outrageous” and “false.” She emphasized that the allegation was entirely baseless and urged the public not to give credence to such misinformation.
“I know no sensible person will believe what is contained in the outrageous tweet,” Okonjo-Iweala stated. “But in these troubled times, it is important to underscore that the statement is false. Again, I enjoin all those seeking to misuse my name to desist!”
Okonjo-Iweala expressed concern about the potential ramifications of such false narratives, particularly given the politically sensitive climate in Nigeria. She stressed the need for caution and responsibility in the dissemination of information during a period of national tension, as discussions of separatism remain a deeply divisive issue in the country.
The World Bank and IMF have not commented on the claims, but no official statements or reports have surfaced to corroborate the existence of any such loan agreement.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, who served as Nigeriaās Minister of Finance before taking on her current international role, has remained a neutral figure in Nigerian politics and has consistently advocated for integrity and transparency in governance.
As tensions around the Biafran separatist movement persist, her response serves as a firm reminder of the importance of verifying facts and refraining from the politicization of prominent figures in the pursuit of misleading agendas.
