The Lagos State Government has announced that it will soon set up a meeting with owners and developers of buildings that are in distress to discuss the best way to handle their redesign and remodeling.

This was revealed over the weekend in Alausa by Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Olumide added that the number of damaged buildings in various regions of the state was concerning and that all parties involved needed to give it their immediate attention.

He stated that in accordance with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019, as amended, the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development was prepared to expand its purview of approving the renovation of existing structures to include offering technical support to owners and developers of distressed buildings, particularly with regard to their design and remodeling.

He went on to say that buildings have lifespans and should be maintained consistently as they get closer to that lifespan rather than being allowed to deteriorate to the point of collapse, which is detrimental to a sustainable and safe environment.

He said that by providing technical assistance, proposing workable alternatives to demolition, and addressing the threat of distressed structures in the state, the proposed strategic meeting will revolutionize the industry.

The meeting is scheduled for November 2024, according to the Commissioner’s hint.
