LAGOS RENEWS COMMITMENT AS GRASSROOTS BOXING TALENT THRIVES AT CHAMPIONSHIP FINALE

The final day of the Lagos Individual Boxing Club Championship unfolded with high energy and fierce talent at the Bishop Aggey Secondary School in Mushin on Sunday, October 27. Young boxers from across Lagos took to the ring, embodying the event’s spirit of community development and youth empowerment.
At the closing ceremony, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, underscored the state’s renewed commitment to grassroots sports. Fatodu expressed Lagos’s dedication to fostering youth potential through sports, particularly in communities like Mushin, renowned for its boxing tradition. “We see this initiative as a way to bring the youth into productive activities, help them unlock their talents, and provide them a path to shape their futures,” he said.
The championship, aimed at cultivating local talent and curbing social vices, featured standout performances, including Abeeb Adekunle of Owonikoko Boxing Club, who clinched gold in the 80kg category, and Omotajo Semiu, who dominated in the 75kg weight class. In the female division, Adura Patience, Divine Emmanuel, and Jinadu Ikimat also claimed gold in their respective weight classes, showcasing skill and determination.
Nunayon Travih, Director of Sports Development at LSSC, highlighted plans to nurture these young athletes’ skills with rigorous training and mentoring. “Their prowess in the ring has shown us that with proper guidance and support, these boxers can represent Lagos proudly on national and international stages,” Travih remarked.
As the championship concluded, Usman Okunnu, LSSC’s Director of Technical Development, reflected on the importance of events like this for cultivating new talent and preparing athletes for upcoming national tournaments. He assured that LSSC would continue to create similar opportunities across sports like cricket, softball, and blind sports, ensuring that Lagos remains a hub for athletic growth at all levels.
The tournament wrapped up with a renewed vision for sports in Lagos—a vision that sees young athletes rising from the grassroots to become champions for themselves and their communities.
