Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, has urged Directors of Administration and Human Resources in the State Public Service to demonstrate exemplary ethical behaviour and continuously uphold the service’s ideals.

Agoro underlined that the method will encourage younger officers to exhibit acceptable leadership skills, hence facilitating the Public Service’s succession planning process.

He made this statement during a three-day retreat for 75 Directors of Administration and Human Resources sponsored by the Public Service Office / Office of the Head of Service at the Jubilee Chalets in Epe, Lagos.

Agoro noted that this year’s retreat, themed, “Leadership Development and Succession Planning: Ensuring Robust Talent Management for Effective Service Delivery,” underscores the urgent need to address the significant leadership gap in today’s Public Service.

He underlined that leadership development improves individuals’ ability to function in leadership roles, supporting the implementation of the organization’s strategy by building alignment, obtaining support, and boosting the capacities of others.

The Head of Service remarked that as human resources strategists in the State Public Service, leadership development begins with them, and that they can only foster others’ leadership talents if they first develop their own leadership.

He emphasised that Administration and Human Resources leaders must bridge the divide through effective leadership development and succession planning.

Agoro remarked that in order to do this, they must purposefully create a talent management culture, which entails proactively bringing in the right individuals and assisting them in reaching their full potential while aligning with organisational goals.

He thanked the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, for emphasising workforce capacity building in the State Public Service and authorising the retreat.

In her welcome address, Mrs. Sunkanmi Oyegbola, Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, advised all Directors of Administration and Human Resources in the Lagos State Public Service to set a good example.

He also advised them to develop succession plans for their various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to facilitate a smooth transition when they retire.

Mr. Abdulrafiu Fashola, one of the retreat participants, thanked Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for providing the Directors of Administration and Human Resources in the State Public Service with the opportunity to learn, unlearn, and relearn new human resource practices.

He emphasised that the retreat will also provide opportunities for networking and alignment with the current administration’s THEMES Plus Agenda.
