PHYSICIANS SAY THE NEED FOR FAMILY PLANNING IS BEING FUELLED BY ECONOMIC HARDSHIP
According to family planning providers in Osun, economic difficulty has led to an increase in the number of couples, both young and old, using family planning methods in the state.
Some of the providers who talked with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in primary health care institutions in the state’s Olorunda Local Government Area attributed the increase to increased awareness.
They reported a rise in the number of couples seeking family planning options in the area since the beginning of the year.
Adejoke Yusuf, a family planning provider at Enikan-Oyun Primary Health Centre, claimed that the facility was seeing between 24 and 40 clients for family planning purposes in a month, unlike the previous year, when it was between 10 and 15.
Yusuf stated that the centre has provided family planning methods to over 350 couples this year.
āThe rate at which people are coming for the family planning methods is unexpected.
āThe influx was as a result of economic hardship and outreach awareness on the benefits of family planning,ā she said.
According to Yusuf, family planning has no bad effects and has significant benefits.
She explained that family planning strategies enabled couples to space their children while also planning for the future.
Similarly, Aishat Olopade, a clinician at Atelewo Primary Health Centre, reported a considerable increase in the number of couples seeking family planning services.
According to Olopade, the centre provided family planning methods to between 30 and 35 couples every month, up from 20 to 25 the previous year.
She stated that the centre has provided family planning services to over 300 individuals in the last ten months.
According to Olopade, the current economic downturn and increased awareness of the benefits of family planning are to blame for the rise in its use.
She claimed that family planning procedures were safe and free of side effects.
Olopade encouraged couples who had yet to adopt these approaches to do so for the sake of their health and family.
One of the consumers, Yemisi Adediwura, stated that she had been using the family planning approach for the previous eight years with no bad effects.
Adediwura stated that since using the family planning approach, she has been able to space her children and plan effectively for them.
She encouraged others who had yet to do it to embrace it, noting that there are no negative consequences.
According to the 2006 Census, the Olorunda Local Government Area has a population of 131,761.
