FIVE FAKE REVENUE COLLECTORS ARRESTED IN EBONYI
Men from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Board of Internal Revenue agents in Ebonyi State have detained five alleged unlawful revenue collectors at the International Market in the city of Abakaliki.
According to information obtained by our correspondent, the arrest occurred during a Tuesday market operation, during which the suspects were apprehended at various points throughout the market while obtaining the illicit tax from market women.
A few booklets of receipts and money previously obtained from underprivileged women and children selling sachet water, vegetables, and other small goods were among the items found.
Some of the women told our correspondent that the unlawful revenue collectors had been a pain in their side because they either seized their goods till they paid or collected between N50 and N100 every day.
Emmanuel Elechi, the head of the Revenue Board team, stated that the suspects’ detention was justified by their persistent disregard for Governor Francis Nwifuru’s order exempting vegetable and tiny traders from revenue collection.
According to him, “We are determined to flush out illegal revenue collectors who are bent on tarnishing the image of the board. We must adhere strictly to the directives of the governor to allow petty traders and vegetable sellers to do their business without paying tax.
“Our governor knows what the poor are going through and decided to reduce the hardship but some people are sabotaging the gesture to enrich themselves. We cannot tolerate that. We shall continue to arrest them and prosecute them to serve as a deterrent to others.”
The arrest follows the implementation of e-ticketing automation for tricycle and commercial motorbike operators in an effort to curb crime and plug revenue leaks in the state.
