Lakurawa, a recently formed terrorist organization, is allegedly offering young men up to one million naira in exchange for their loyalty.

Expert in counterterrorism and insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin, Zagazola Makama, announced this on Saturday in a post on his X account.

A reliable source told Makama that Lakurawa, which is purportedly made up of people from Mali, Chad, Libya, Niger, and Burkina Faso, was actively enlisting young people from the area in Sokoto by offering them large sums of money.

He claimed that based on the testimonies of witnesses, the money incentive is a component of a vigorous recruitment effort meant to win supporters for their cause. According to the security expert, Lakurawa purportedly follow radical ideas associated with the Khawarij sect, which are comparable to those of Boko Haram, in contrast to regular criminal gangs.

Makama added: “Local sources suggest that they employ a combination of financial incentives and ideological influence to gain support among vulnerable communities.

“Beyond the recruitment, the Lakurawa reportedly confront and expel bandits and confiscate their cattle in areas under their control.

“The Lakurawa extremists are yet to carry out any attack in the North West.”
