Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese champions, announced on Monday that Joao Pereira will succeed Ruben Amorim, who is headed to Manchester United, as head coach.

After Amorim leaves for Old Trafford, the 40-year-old will take over as manager of the reserve squad.

In Amorim’s last game as manager, Sporting pulled off a stunning comeback from a two-goal deficit to win 4-2 against Braga on Sunday, keeping their perfect record in the Primeira Liga this year.

Sporting announced on social media that Pereira, a former Portugal right-back who had three stints at the club as a player, would have his first press conference as manager later on Monday.

After a stellar tenure in the Portuguese city, where he led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and then won the trophy again last season, Amorim resigned to take over at Man United after Erik ten Hag was fired.

After defeating Manchester City 4-1 in Amorim’s final home game as coach last week, they are now ranked second in the Champions League standings.
