BAUCHI COUPLE CALLS OFF WEDDING DUE TO UNFAVORABLE GENOTYPE TEST RESULT
Muhammad Ibrahim, a citizen of Bauchi State, canceled his wedding after it was determined by medical tests that he and his fiancée, Fatima Abdulqadir, are not genetically compatible.
Ibrahim announced the decision to postpone the wedding, which was originally planned on November 29, 2024, on Facebook on November 21, 2024.
He clarified that there was a considerable chance of producing children with sickle cell disease because he and his fiancée were carriers of the AS gene.
Ibrahim, a graduate of Bauchi State University’s Zoology program, revealed that they only learned of this last month after testing at two different hospitals to validate the findings.
Assuming there wouldn’t be any problems, the couple had not prioritized genetic testing during their three years of dating.
In the Facebook post, Ibrahim wrote, “Dear friends and family, it’s with an incredibly heavy heart that I regretfully announce the cancellation of my upcoming wedding.
“Due to unforeseen genetic compatibility issues, my partner and I have made the difficult decision to go our separate ways.”
He described the news as a “devastating shock”, adding that their inability to proceed with the wedding had left him heartbroken.
According to Ibrahim, who spoke with our correspondent, some family members urged him and his fiancée to move forward with their plans but they refused.
Concerns about the possible health hazards of having children who might inherit the sickle cell gene led to the decision, he said.
Social media friends expressed sorrow for the couple’s choice, with many praising their bravery. Ibrahim asked for prayers and understanding during what he called a “dark hour” as he wrapped up his message.
“It’s for the unborn children not to suffer,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “This is a wake-up call for everyone to prioritise genotype testing early in relationships.”
