34 illegal migrants were arrested, and many contraband items were seized in November as the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Joint Border Patrol Team increased its efforts to combat smuggling.

Among these were 285 bales of used clothing, 802 jerry cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 816 bags of foreign parboiled rice, and other illegal items.

The team’s coordinator, Deputy Comptroller Mohamed Shuaibu, attributed the stoppage of smuggling operations to increased patrols, surveillance, and intelligence collection along border areas. He emphasised the detrimental effects of illegal migration and smuggling, including insecurity, economic instability, and the exploitation of weaker groups.

816 bags of 50 kg foreign parboiled rice, 802 25-litre PMS jerry cans, 285 bales of used clothing, 61 jumbo sacks of used shoes, 674 kg of cannabis sativa, and eight used cars were among the confiscated goods.

In keeping with the Federal Government’s zero-tolerance stance on smuggling, Shuaibu underlined the Customs Service’s dedication to protecting Nigeria’s economy and national security. Due to PMS’s flammability, an additional ₦8.02 million was raised from its auction, bringing the total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the confiscated commodities for the previous month to ₦556.43 million.

In relation to the contraband, two people were taken into custody. Shuaibu has warned of the serious societal repercussions of illegal drug trafficking, which is frequently linked to organised crime and violence. The 674 kg of cannabis that was seized has been turned over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for additional investigation.
