CRIME: POLICE BEGIN MANHUNT FOR KIDNAPPERS OF EX-LAWMAKERS, WIFE IN NASARAWA

The Nasarawa State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the kidnappers of a former member of the House of Representatives for the Lafia, Obi, Keana Federal Constituency in the state, Dr. Joseph Kigbu, alongside his wife.

The command’s Assistant Police Public Relations Officer of, Assistant, Yusuf Idi confirmed the development to our correspondent in Lafia, the state capital, on Tuesday.

According to him, the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, had directed the tactical formations of the command to collaborate with the military to ensure that the victims are rescued unhurt within the shortest possible time.

“The Nasarawa State Police Command is aware of the matter. The CP has already directed the tactical teams in conjunction with the military and other security agencies for the manhunt of the criminals, for their possible arrest and to ensure that the victims are rescued unhurt,” he said.

It was gathered that the popular politician and his wife were kidnapped on Monday evening while they were travelling to Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Further findings revealed that a police officer who was attached to his convoy was killed during the attack by the gunmen who embarked on the operation in their numbers.

The incident took place about 6pm between Nunku community in the Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and Gwantu community in the Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The spot is noted for its notorious criminal activities where several kidnapings had taken place, leading to the loss of lives of many of the victims.

A villager in the area who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said there were sporadic gunshots around the communities while the bandits were carrying out the dastardly act.

The source narrated that residents of the communities later saw the lifeless body of a police officer who was attached to the politician when they visited the scene of the incident hours after the attack.

“We are appealing to the security agencies including the police to make haste and ensure that the victims are released from the kidnappers’ den unhurt.

“The issues of insecurity in this environment have become a thing of concern. We are begging the government to help us out of this situation by deploying adequate security personnel to this area so that we can have peace of mind and start sleeping with our two eyes closed at night,” the villager urged.
