OAU TO CELEBRATE OLUREMI TINUBU, MTN CEO, OTHERS WITH DOCTORATES
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, will be awarded an honorary doctorate at Obafemi Awolowo University’s 48th convocation event in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
This was revealed at a pre-convocation press conference on campus on Thursday by Professor Simeon Bamire, the university’s vice-chancellor.
Karl Toriola, the CEO of MTN Nigeria Communications, and Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, the Group Chairman of Mutual Benefits Plc, would also get recognition, the vice chancellor added.
Bamire also disclosed that 7,368 students will graduate during the three-day convocation ceremonies, and two other notable people will also receive honorary doctorates: Daere Afonya-Akobo, a leader in the oil and gas sector, and Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, an academic and entrepreneur.
In her explanation of Senator Tinubu’s award criteria, Bamire emphasized her longstanding dedication to the university and her efforts to enhance the wellbeing of OAU students and the campus community.
āSpecifically, we will confer honorary awards on five exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions to humanity by uplifting the less privileged and advancing societal progress through their talents, financial resources, and material support,ā Bamire said.
The Honorary Award Recipients for this year are:
āSenator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, OON First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is an astute politician and advocate for the underprivileged, particularly women and children.
āDr. Akinade Akanmu Ogunbiyi Group Chairman of Mutual Benefit PIc, leads a conglomerate of nine companies employing over 5,000 people.
āProf. Anthony Adegbulugbe: A distinguished entrepreneur, academic, and engineer, Prof. Adegbulugbe has demonstrated extraordinary generosity through the Springland Kids and Youth Foundation (SKY Foundation) and the Anthony and Afolake Adegbulugbe Foundation.
āPrince Karl Olutokun Toriola: A seasoned business leader and telecommunications expert, Prince Toriola serves as the CEO of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc.
āDaere Afonya-Akobo: A prominent figure in the oil and gas sector, Daere Afonya-Akobo is highly committed to education and philanthropy. His contributions include Donating ICT units to Rivers State University in 2021,ā the VC said.
In providing information on the grades earned by the graduating students from the university’s 13 faculties, Bamire stated that 215 students received First Class Honours, Second Class Upper Division, 2,197, Second Class Lower Division, 2,691, Third Class Honours Upper Credit, 61, Lower Credit, 33, Pass, 62, for a total of 6,015 students for Classified Degrees, and 13 students received Distinction, 59 students received Pass with Distinction, 154 students received Pass with Credit, and 169 students received a total of 395 for Unclassified Degrees.
According to the VC, 708 students would receive Master’s degrees and 176 students would receive Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, while 74 students would receive Postgraduate Diplomas.
