TARABA VARSITY EXAMS POSTPONED INDEFINITELY OVER STAFF STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ Taraba State University chapter has announced an indefinite strike, which has halted all academic activity, including the current second-semester exams.

The organization made the announcement Thursday during a congress meeting at the Jalingo university.

Dr. Garba Mbave, the chairperson of the ASUU, told reporters that the industrial action was sparked by a number of unaddressed issues.

The main problems are unpaid pay, the lack of a working pension plan, unpaid salary arrears following the statewide ASUU strike in 2022, and the absence of a university governing council.

Other complaints include the government’s refusal to authorize a 35% pay increase for professors and proportionate adjustments for other academic personnel, the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and the failure to implement the national minimum wage for university employees.

According to Dr. Mbave, the union had tried every possible way to communicate with the state government and the university administration.

ā€œWe have made repeated attempts to resolve these issues through negotiation, but the governmentā€™s persistent neglect of our welfare has left us no choice but to take this step. Staff members cannot continue to work under these conditions,ā€ Mbave said.

The lack of a governing council, according to the ASUU Chairperson, is a major barrier to resolving important administrative and policy issues.

He also recognized how the strike affected students, especially those who were in the middle of an exam.

ā€œIt is not our intention to disrupt examinations or leave students stranded, but this strike is the only viable option left to demand justice for our members,ā€ he added.

In the meantime, strike-affected students have voiced their annoyance and urged the state government and university administration to end the standoff as soon as possible.

At the time this report was filed, calls to Dr. Augustine Godwin, the Taraba State Commissioner for Education, were unanswered, and a text message sent to her line was still unanswered. As a result, attempts to contact her for comments were fruitless.
