HEALTH: LASSA FEVER KILLS 23 IN EBONYI, 48 CASES CONFIRMED
The Lassa Fever outbreak has claimed 23 lives in Ebonyi State.
The Ebonyi state government made this announcement while outlining measures to enhance healthcare access and the general well-being of its people.
At a state ministry of health event held in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Thursday, Governor Francis Nwifuru revealed this information. He also stated that 48 of the 394 instances of Laser Fever that have been confirmed between January and December 2024 have been identified.
Nwifuru revealed that in order to improve healthcare delivery in rural regions, the state intends to build one specialised hospital in each of the three senatorial zones.
He noted that his administration has prioritised healthcare through its efforts to strengthen the public health infrastructure, surveillance systems and community engagement to effectively prevent and control outbreaks such as Lassa fever, cholera and other life-threatening diseases.
āIn Ebonyi State, we have recorded 394 suspected cases since January till date with 48 confirmed cases out of which 23 persons died of the disease while 25 were treated and discharged homeā.
āThe spread of this virus is believed to be facilitated by socio-cultural practice, poor health-seeking behaviours, poor environmental sanitation and lack of awarenessā.
