Two infamous gunrunners have been taken into custody by Kaduna State Police Command agents in the state’s Zaria local government area.

Mansir Hassan, the command’s public relations officer, revealed this in a statement on Friday.

He added that during a regular vehicle patrol along the Zaria-Jos Road on Thursday, December 5th, 2024, officers from 47 Police Mobile Force Squadron Zaria apprehended the suspects.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspects, Zubairu Musa and Nasiru Saidu, both from Katsina State’s Kankara Local Government Area, were discovered in possession of a bag that included 65 live cartridges, eight locally produced pump-action weapons, and one locally made handgun.

The suspects are currently working with the police to help apprehend their accomplices and to determine the entire scope of the gunrunning network in Kaduna State, Hassan added, adding that preliminary investigations showed the suspects were involved in the illegal trafficking of firearms.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Commissioner of Police for Kaduna State, responded by praising the officers for their prompt action.

He asked people to be on the lookout and notify the police of any suspicious activity, and he reiterated the Command’s dedication to upholding law and order.

One North-Western state, Kaduna, is impacted by insecurity, particularly banditry.

Residents are terrorised, communities are raided and looted, residents are killed and abducted, and homes are set on fire by the bandits.

The gangs, which have gained notoriety for mass kidnappings of schoolchildren, have camps in a vast forest that crosses the states of Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger.

In an effort to combat the increasing number of fatal bandit attacks on isolated settlements, the Nigerian military has conducted massive operations against bandits in Zamfara and Sokoto in recent weeks.

Several kingpins have been killed as a result of the military offensives, including Halilu Sububu, who is regarded as the principal bandit boss in northwest Nigeria.
