President Bola Tinubu has once again made major modifications to the South East Development Commission’s proposed leadership, sending a new list of candidates to the Senate for approval.

Announced on December 6, 2024, the amended list includes additional appointments meant to increase the Commission’s ability to promote development in the South East.

Tinubu replaced Emeka Atuma, the original chairman nominee, with Dr. Emeka Nworgu, according to a State House press release.

Atuma and other individuals were named by Tinubu on Friday when he introduced the North West Development Commission’s leadership.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, signed the revised nomination, which was posted on X on Saturday.

The statement read, “The President replaced all the three executive directors initially nominated and named two additional executive directors.”

Stanley Ohajuruka, who takes Anthony Ugbo’s place as Executive Director of Finance, is also on the revised list.

In place of Obinna Obiekweihe, Toby Okechukwu has been named the new Executive Director of Projects.

Dr. Daniel Ikechukwu Ugwuja will be replaced as Executive Director of Corporate Services by Chief Sylvester Okonkwo.

The board has also been expanded to include Dr. Clifford Ogbede and Chidi Echeazu, two executive directors without designated roles. To maintain continuity at the head of the Commission, the President kept Mark C. Okoye on as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Donatus Eyinnah Nwankpa, a board member, has been removed off the revised list.

A number of the original list’s nominations were kept in spite of these modifications.

These include of Hamma Adama Ali Kumo, Ifeanyi Agwu, Nasiru Usman, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, Okey Ezenwa, and Ugochukwu H. Agballah.

Chief (Mrs.) Joke Adebayo-Chukwuma, Orure Kufre Inima, and Edward David Onoja were also kept.

The revised list increases the board’s membership from 15 to 16. Onanuga noted, “President Tinubu expects the new nominees, as pioneers, to use their wealth of experience and expertise to actualise the Commission’s mandate and develop the South East region.”

“All the nominations are subject to Senate confirmation, marking a crucial step in establishing the SEDC as a driver of growth and innovation in the South East,” the statement concluded.
