UPDATE: NITDA ALERTS NIGERIANS ABOUT MALWARE STEALING BANKING DETAILS

Nigerians have been warned by the National Information Technology Development Agency about a banking trojan that uses sophisticated phishing efforts to target consumers worldwide.

On Monday, the Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team at NITDA issued the advice.

Using “advanced techniques, including screen overlay attacks and remote device control, to steal sensitive information such as banking credentials and personal data,” the agency claims that the latest Grandoreiro is a serious threat.

According to NITDA, phishing emails and fraudulent websites are the main ways that the malware spreads, tricking users into installing harmful software that looks like genuine updates or documents.

Once installed, the malware gets past security measures and gives hackers access to victims’ devices without authorisation.
NITDA said that identity theft and monetary damages could result from the infection.

To reduce the risk, the organisation advised the public to use caution and implement suggested security measures.

“Cyber threats like Grandoreiro are evolving, and users need to stay vigilant and adopt robust security practices to protect their information,” the agency advised.

To protect online banking and financial accounts, NITDA advised avoiding links and attachments from unfamiliar emails, downloading software only from reliable sources, and turning on multifactor authentication.

The organisation also underlined the significance of routinely checking bank accounts for illegal activity, avoiding using public Wi-Fi for financial transactions, and maintaining antivirus software up to date.
