BOBRISKY, US ELECTIONS, NATIONAL ANTHEM TOP NIGERIA’S 2024 GOOGLE SEARCH TRENDS
Google revealed its 2024 Year in Search for Nigeria on Tuesday, pointing out that the national grid, Nigeria’s new national anthem, and the U.S. elections were the top three news searches of the year.
Notable people, bands, films, TV shows, and queries that piqued Nigerians’ curiosity are among the most searched topics according to the yearly survey.
“In Nigeria, this year’s results show a continued interest in the political and economic landscape, with searches related to the U.S. elections, the new national anthem, and the national grid topping the news category in this order,” Google stated.
Bobrisky was the most searched for trending personality, which reflects Nigerians’ interest in well-known people. For musicians like Khaid and Shallipopi, the music scene saw a boom in popularity.
The songs “I Don’t Care” by Boy Spyce and “Ozeba and Commas” by Ayra Starr were the most popular. The top three songs in the words category were Chandler Moore’s Omemma, Ozeba, and Ogechi.
Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, offered the following commentary on the results:
“The 2024 Year in Search offers a unique lens into the questions, interests, and conversations that shaped the lives of Nigerians this year. From cultural milestones to pressing concerns, these insights reflect how Search continues to be a valuable tool for users to navigate and better understand their world.”
Nigerians also demonstrated a keen interest in entertainment. Top movies included A Tribe Called Judah, Treasure In The Sky, and Damsel. Popular TV series searches featured Supacell, My Demon, and Queen of Tears. In culinary searches, the Pornstar Martini recipe led the way.
Practical and global concerns were also reflected in trending questions such as “How much is a dollar to naira today?”, “How to get perfectly defined curls for African hair?”, and “Who won the U.S. presidential election?”. Nigerians frequently searched for the meanings of words like demure, steeze, and pet peeves.
The U.S. elections, in which Donald Trump won in November, and President Bola Tinubu’s decision on May 29 to bring back Nigeria’s former national anthem—which had been dropped in 1978—were among the noteworthy events mentioned in the 2024 report.
Frequent power outages also brought attention to the national grid, which collapsed more than ten times in 2024, according to reports.
In order to help consumers better understand the world through search, Google’s Year in Search continues to provide a thorough study of the trends that influenced local and worldwide conversations.
