TARABA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CALL OFF PLANNED PROTEST, ISSUE ULTIMATUM TO STATE GOVERNMENT

Taraba State University (TSU) students have temporarily called off their planned nonviolent demonstration in the state.

Noting that the walkout that was initially planned for Tuesday was postponed in response to the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) Taraba Chapter’s indefinite strike, the students also gave the state government until Friday to respond to their demands.

Exams and final-year academic activities at the university, which is situated in the state capital of Jalingo, were interrupted by the ASUU strike.

Aliyu Sulaiman, the president of the National Union of Taraba State Students, or NUTASS, had pleaded with the government to move quickly to end the issue and make it easier for the students to resume their studies.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Taraba Chapter, chairman of the Joint Campus Council, Nungamiya Galeya Lodiya, also issued a warning, saying that students would stage protests and close all federal routes in the state if the government did not comply with their requests by the deadline.

According to the union, long-standing complaints about the state government’s claimed failure to meet demands were the reason behind the lecturers’ current protest.

As of the time this article was filed, the impasse had left students fuming, and Rose Okoh Agada, president of the student union, expressed disappointment that students were being unfairly drawn into the conflict.

“The government and lecturers must find a way to end this crisis; we cannot continue to suffer for their disagreements,” Agada stated.

Norbert Abeh, a spokesperson of the Students spokesperson Assembly, or SRA, has urged both sides to put students’ needs first and find a quick solution to the standoff.
