BREAKING: NATIONAL GRID EXPERIENCES MAJOR COLLAPSE, RESTORATION BEGINS
The national grid has again suffered a major collapse today, Wednesday, leading to blackouts in some parts of the country.
Confirming the development on its official X handle on Wednesday, Nigeria National Grid wrote, “Breaking: Major Grid Setback has occurred! Restoration to commence.
HOTJIST reports that from January 2024 till November, the grid has collapsed 11 times.
Within one week in October, the grid collapsed three times with its attendant blackouts, sparking reactions from Nigerians.
This collapse makes it a historic 12 times in a year that the grid has collapsed.
Prior to the collapse on Wednesday, a tweet via the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid predicted the collapse as a result of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority halting gas supply to generation companies over a debt totalling N2 trillion.
The statement reads, “An electricity blackout is imminent following the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s directive to gas producers to cease supplying gas to indebted generation companies (GenCos).
“NMDPRA stated that the substantial debts owed to producers had hindered their ability to sustain operations.
“It called on gas off-takers, particularly power generation companies, to ensure timely payment for the gas supplied. The federal government and some GenCos currently owe over N2 trillion in legacy debts to gas producers in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, a public notice issued on Wednesday by the Jos Discos, signed by its Head, Corporate Communications, Dr. Friday Adakole Elijah, reads, “Dear esteemed customers, the current outage being experienced within our franchise states is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid.
“The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred this afternoon at about 1333 hours of today, Wednesday, 11th
December 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.
“We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we strive to serve you better,” the statement added.
