EDO ASSEMBLY SUSPENDS 18 LG CHAIRMEN, VICE CHAIRMEN FOR TWO MONTHS
On Monday, the Edo State House of Assembly imposed a two-month suspension on all 18 local government chairman and their vice chairs.
Additionally, during the suspension time, the legislators instructed the councils’ legislative arm leaders to take charge of their administration.
The decision came after a resolution was adopted that was backed by Donald Okogbe of Akoko-Edo 2 Constituency and proposed by Isibor Adeh of Esan Northeast 1 Constituency.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, in a petition dated November 16, 2024, titled “Insubordination and Gross Misconduct by the 18 Local Government Chairmen Over Their Refusal to Submit Financial Records for Scrutiny,” called on the Assembly to address the issue.
Section 20(b) of the Local Government Act, which gives the House of Assembly the authority to suspend any local government chairman for two months while an investigation into claims of wrongdoing is conducted, was referenced by Adeh when he made the motion.
Three legislators abstained from voting, while 14 parliamentarians supported the measure and six opposed it.
Chief Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the Edo Assembly, ordered Yahaya Omogbai, the Clerk of the House, to perform a head count of the members and stated that the council chiefs would not be permitted to engage in insubordination or egregious misbehavior.
Additionally, four nominations were vetted and approved by the legislature to serve as the chairman and members of the Edo State Sports Commission.
