After a 10-year suspension, the Rivers State Christmas Discount Market is set to make a comeback, with the State Government assuring residents of access to goods at significantly reduced prices.

The market, slated to commence on Thursday, December 18, will be held at the Elekahia Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Speaking to Channels Television at the venue, the Rivers State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, John Otamiri, revealed that the market aims to ease the financial burden on residents during the festive season.

According to Otamiri, vendors have been provided to the venue free of charge to ensure that the cost of goods is kept at the barest minimum.

He emphasized the state government’s commitment to making the program impactful for residents.

The market’s return is significant, as the initiative was last held 10 years ago under the administration of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi. The upcoming edition is expected to run for 10 days, from December 18 to December 28.

The consultant to the Rivers State Government on the program, Reginald Uranta, explained that the discount market will feature a wide range of goods, ensuring affordability for all.

“The Environment is serene, people can relax here. There is a Christmas village in the Discount Market. There is a stage, Comedians and Musicians will perform daily. There would also be a playground for children,” Uranta revealed.
