CRIME: TROOPS ARREST ILLEGAL MINERS, RECOVER PRECIOUS STONES, OTHERS IN TARABA
A party of illegal miners was caught by 6 Brigade troops stationed at the Garba Chede Checkpoint in the Bali Local Government Area, and valuable stones that were being moved out of the area were confiscated.
Following reliable information, the watchful soldiers stopped a truck with the foreign registration number B 0515 VV on December 17 and discovered that it was hiding illicitly mined goods.
The alleged precious stones were concealed in sack sacks wrapped with dry grasses in an attempt to avoid discovery, according to a statement made by Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director, 6 Brigade Army Public Relations.
According to him, the action is consistent with the Nigerian Army’s dedication to protecting the country’s resources and making sure environmental regulations are followed.
The driver of the truck, identified as Abubakar Suleiman, along with eight other occupants, was immediately taken into custody.
“Following standard procedures, they were handed over to the Taraba State Special Taskforce Committee on Environmental Protection, Public Safety, and Prohibition of Deforestation for further investigation and prosecution,” the statement read.
Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, the commander of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, spoke about the arrest and gave his word that the Brigade will continue to support civil authorities in their efforts to enforce environmental standards and protect citizens’ lives and property.
He commended the good people of Taraba for their continued support and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to security agencies for prompt action. “Together, we can foster a safer and more sustainable environment in Taraba State and beyond.”
Illegal mining is rampant in some communities in Nigeria. Experts have linked the activities of miners to banditry which is rocking several parts of northern Nigeria.
