BODIJA EXPLOSION: MAKINDE SETS UP PANEL TO DISTRIBUTE RELIEF FUNDS TO VICTIMS

The Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, inaugurated a 10-man committee tasked with overseeing the management and disbursement of the Bodija Explosion Relief Fund.

The explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024, at Dejo Oyelese Street in Bodija, Ibadan, resulted in several fatalities and numerous injuries.

At the inauguration ceremony, held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, Makinde emphasised the need for transparency in handling the funds, stating: “The committee’s job is to oversee the management and disbursement of the relief funds to those who lost property to the explosion. The government is providing support to the people affected, not compensation. We are interested in doing the right thing for the people of the state.”

The governor also announced plans to repair the road leading to Dejo Oyelese Street and to erect a monument in memory of the incident, adding: “We are committed to ensuring that the right thing is done for those affected by this unfortunate event.”

Makinde expressed his gratitude to the professional bodies that assisted in the aftermath of the explosion, saying: “I appreciate the various professional bodies that worked with the state when the incident happened. We will incorporate people who will work efficiently with the committee and put the resources where needed.”

The committee, chaired by the state Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, includes a diverse group of individuals, including Iyiola Oladokun, former Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group; Muyiwa Bamgbose, Chairman of the Bodija Estate Residents Association; and Ojuolape Busari, Secretary of the state Emergency Management Agency, among others.

In addition, the committee includes nominees from various organisations such as the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and the Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including former Deputy Governor, Hamid Gbadamosi, wife of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja, Mutiat, former Speaker, Monsurat Sumonu, Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi, and other senior government officials and political leaders.
