IBADAN STAMPEDE: COURT TO DECIDE ON OONI’S EX-QUEEN, ORIYOMI’S BAIL REQUEST JANUARY 13

Read Time:1 Minute, 26 Second

Judge K. B. Olawoyin, who is in charge of Court 8 of the Oyo State High Court on Ring Road in Ibadan, has set Tuesday, January 13 as the date for his decision about the bail request submitted by Naomi Silekunola, the former queen of Ife, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and Abdulahi Fasasi.

Fasasi is the principal of Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, and Hamzat is the owner of the radio station Agidigbo FM, which is situated in Ibadan.

Due to the stampede that took place during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, in December 2024, they are presently on trial.

At least thirty-five children lost their lives in the tragedy.

On Tuesday, the Oyo State High Court, located at Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan, heard the bail applications.

The court had received a summons of application for bail from the suspects’ attorney.

Justice Olawoyin postponed making a decision on the bail application until Tuesday, January 13, after hearing the counsel’s remarks and arguments on legal issues.

At the Nigerian Correctional Center Agodi, the defendants are still under remand.

Waheed Olajide represented Fasasi, Musibau Adetunmbi (SAN) represented former queen Naomi, and Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN) represented Hamzat.

In a hearing that lasted more than five hours, the attorneys argued each issue independently.

Additionally, the state has submitted a counterapplication challenging the accused’ bail.

Top Ministry of Justice officials were led by Mr. Abiodun Aikomo, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, who headed the state team.

In their individual arguments, each lawyer explained to the court why their clients should be free, pointing out that there isn’t enough proof in front of the court to support a confinement to jail.
